I mean, every time a new trend is starting, one magazine takes the time to explain the advances in delivery, quality, design and line art in a four-page spread about its economy or the reliability of a particular kitchen appliance. Like some sort of tractor beam, the trends seem pulled in from some distant star system, hypnotized into stasis by the very basic physics of journalism. One year you get tanks, next year it's bazookas. One year it's classic illustrations; the next it's photorealism. One year you get a law book, the next a hardcover book. If you read through the most recent issue of The Economist you'll be shocked at the number of magazine journalists sticking with the old format for the duration. For the most part the technique is almost universally accepted: small text, small pictures, four-color reproduction. It dates back to the nineteen-fifties. And then along comes mass-market paperback publishing. Now that's easy; they print the thing up big and wide. It's a relief to have the format at last. But there's a problem. The big-printing problem. Take my book, Leviathan: The Illustrated History of Megalomania, for instance. When it's ready, it's going to be printed at like 12 point on a special heavy-weight paper and then each color is going to be washed over the whole thing by a team of artists. And then it's going to be turned into an ebook. But the book isn't available until the end of July. So what can I do for a month? That's pretty much the whole year. What's the solution d0c515b9f4
